Order in the Chaos: From Library Science to Strategic Operations
Mike Alexander didn’t follow a linear path to leadership and that’s exactly what makes him effective. From a childhood steeped in math competitions to a college degree in English and religion, and eventually a master’s in library science, Mike’s background is a blend of logic, language, and empathy. His career reflects that same multidimensional approach: part systems-thinker, part people-first leader.
What ties it all together is a core belief: strategy only works when it's built around people.
Today, Mike is known as the person you tap to manage messy things , a fixer who brings clarity to complexity, whether he’s overhauling a legacy system, guiding a cross-functional team through conflict, or building operational scaffolding that empowers people to thrive.
Curves That Count: The Path to Leadership Through Inquiry
Mike's early interest in library science might seem like a detour from his later work in business strategy and operations. In reality, it was the start of everything.
“Librarianship taught me to ask the right questions,” Mike explains. “There’s a technique called the ‘reference interview’, someone comes to the desk and says they need everything about Tokyo, and your job is to uncover what they really need. Are they going on a trip? Writing a paper? Doing research? That practice of uncovering intent and guiding people to clarity has shaped how I work ever since.”
That early training in structured inquiry translated seamlessly into business analysis. Over time, Mike added tools from project management, product leadership, and operations to his toolkit. But the through line remains the same: find the fundamental “why,” clarify the true need, and build systems around it.
The Crossover Skills: Business Analysis, Ops, Product, and Change Leadership
Mike’s leadership skillset is unusually wide and deep.
Business Analysis: Mike sees through surface-level symptoms to diagnose root causes. He’s adept at gathering requirements, uncovering hidden assumptions, and translating ambiguous needs into actionable frameworks.
Operations Leadership: As a former VP of Operations and Chief of Staff, Mike has led org-wide change initiatives, scaled internal processes, and built operational backbones for small- and mid-sized companies.
Product & Tech Fluency: With hands-on experience in UX, testing, APIs, and data, he brings credibility in technical conversations, without losing sight of user or business needs.
Change Leadership: Mike doesn’t just manage change; he leads people through it. His high EQ and people-first approach help him navigate sensitive transitions and build alignment across stakeholders.
This crossover fluency makes him particularly valuable in lean, mission-driven orgs, especially those undergoing transformation or seeking to scale responsibly.
People + Process = Sustainable Impact
Mike’s superpower isn’t just problem-solving, it’s understanding the human dynamics behind the problem. “I don’t see people as roles,” he says. “I see people as people. What’s really going on? What’s keeping them stuck? What do they need to do their best work?”
That clarity helps him build high-trust, high-accountability teams. Former colleagues describe him as someone who holds high expectations with empathy- an advocate for excellence who leads with integrity and compassion.
In one past role, he was called “the best manager I ever had.” In another, he was nicknamed “the fixer”, the leader they brought in when things weren’t working. In every case, Mike’s impact stems from his ability to bring order to operational chaos without losing the human thread.
Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter
Now in transition, Mike is looking for his next opportunity. Ideally in a small to mid-sized, mission-aligned organization where his mix of technical fluency and emotional intelligence can make a measurable difference.
Whether in health, mental health, education, or another impact-driven sector, Mike is drawn to environments where people care deeply about their work and where systems need to evolve to support meaningful outcomes.
“Everything I’ve done so far has led me here,” he says. “The tools I’ve picked up, the people I’ve worked with, the challenges I’ve helped solve, they all point toward one goal: helping organizations work better, for the sake of the people they serve.”
Leadership Insight: Build Systems That Serve People
Mike’s story is a case study in how nontraditional paths produce exceptional leaders. His blend of structured thinking, emotional intelligence, and cross-functional experience makes him uniquely positioned to help mission-driven organizations navigate complexity, and come out stronger.
Because in Mike’s world, strategy isn’t about control. It’s about clarity. It’s about people. And it’s about building the right kind of order in the chaos.
